The Bubbling Springs Stream Stabilization project, contracted to Two Alpha Contracting by the City of Wentzville, addressed critical erosion and instability issues along a section of Bubbling Springs Creek. The project aimed to protect vital storm and sanitary infrastructure from potential damage and prevent contamination of the creek.
Two Alpha Contracting’s scope of work encompassed a comprehensive range of construction and environmental restoration activities. These included:
- Channel Clearing: Removal of debris and obstructions to improve water flow.
- Excavation: Shaping the channel and banks to achieve the desired grade and stability.
- Rock-Lined Slopes: Construction of 24″ rock-lined slopes to provide erosion control and bank stabilization.
- Grade Control Boulders: Placement of 36″ grade control boulders to manage water flow and prevent further erosion.
- Rock Stilling Basin: Construction of a 48″ rock stilling basin to dissipate energy and reduce downstream erosion.
- Modular Block Retaining Wall: Installation of a modular block retaining wall to provide structural support and prevent soil slippage.
- Fencing: Installation of fencing to protect the stabilized area and control access.
- Live Staking: Planting of live stakes to promote natural revegetation and bank stabilization.
- Sodding: Installation of sod to establish immediate ground cover and prevent erosion.
- Restoration Seeding: Seeding of native grasses and wildflowers to restore the natural vegetation community.
- Native Planting: Installation of native plants to enhance biodiversity and improve habitat.
The overarching goal of this project was to provide effective grade and stream bank control, ensuring the long-term stability of the storm and sanitary infrastructure. By preventing damage to these systems, the project effectively safeguards Bubbling Springs Creek from potential contamination, contributing to the overall health of the watershed.
